As Executive Director, my job is primarily as troubleshooter and fundraiser in chief. I also spend a great deal of my time determining where APEB needs to concentrate its growth efforts-what new services or programs it needs to develop to best serve the evolving needs of people living with HIV and to be ever more effective at preventing the spread of HIV.
My interest in HIV work stems from my own losses of friends and loved ones to this disease. Although my work is largely administrative and technical and seldom programmatic, this is still for me a labor of passion and love. I may not be able to counsel or heal, but I bring my own mix of business, legal and research skills to this fight against HIV and AIDS. I think that APEB has a great future. We are committed to increasing the number and richness of services that we bring to our clients. We expect to continue to expand in both services and geographical reach over the next few years-despite the continued economic difficulties. We have begun a fairly aggressive community-based research program so that we can help to discover better solutions to the challenges posed by HIV and AIDS. And though my Board of Directors does not yet agree, I anticipate that APEB will have a growing international presence over the next five year! It's my job to make all these expectations come to fruition! |

I am the longest tenured employee at APEB, and am very proud of it. I came to APEB in August of 1993 as a volunteer, until I was offered a part-time receptionist position in October of 1993. The following month I became full-time, and I have not looked back since! I'm a proud mother of three children, and a loving wife to my wonderful husband. I've worked in the non-profit field since 1989 and working for APEB continues to be a deeply rewarding experience that has augmented my un-yielding commitment. |

My commitment to working toward the eradication of HIV/AIDS began in 2005. Besides the fact that life-saving medications were available; I still saw too many people
dying because of stigma, and the inability to access other supportive services which
could have promoted their well-being, and helped them gain access to medications.
As the Director of Client Services my primary goal is to insure that our clients receive needed support in an authentic, respectful, and friendly manner. Our teams strives to promote health and wellness among our clients and ourselves. We want to meet our clients where they are, and work with them to provide support and promote holistic well- being in every area of their lives. We strive to help each of our clients understand that an HIV or AIDS diagnosis is not the end, but the beginning of a new way of living that can be even more rich and fulfilling than before their diagnosis. |

In my capacity as Director of Health Promotion I manage multiple programs and contracts which include HIV Prevention, Counseling and Testing, Research, Youth Programs, Transgender Programs, and Volunteer Services. I also get to work with an ever increasing group of talented service providers and clinicians. As a senior manager I'm also involved in the operational administration of the agency and do some of the fundraising and grant writing at APEB.
What I've lost to HIV will never be recovered. My father died of AIDS related pneumonia when I was 12 years old. Since I came out at 19 years old I've met many brilliant, talented and amazing gay and bisexual friends that I've since lost. As a Black Gay writer and poet I mourn the loss of an entire generation of the Black Gay Literary tradition. I believe that we can beat this thing and I'm in this fight until we do!!! |
