HIV does not occur in a vacuum. When a person has become HIV infected through sex and drug use those behaviors have occurred within the context of that person’s life. Sex that causes HIV infection can only happen within the context of some interaction between two people who live in a community and have life circumstance. All of these factors have been shown by research, science and plain common since to affect the choices about all of a person’s behavior including their sexual risk behaviors.

If HIV does not occur in a vacuum and people do not find themselves at risk for HIV in a vacuum then GOOD HIV prevention work cannot be done in a vacuum. Research has shown time and time again that people who belong to strong communities are more resilient to a number of adverse conditions including HIV.

Our community of Black men is growing into a strong community of Black men who are gay, bisexual, same gender loving and undefined. It is a community of men who are HIV positive and HIV negative. It is a community that supports its members regardless of where they are in their lives in regard to sexual identity, “out-ness,” age, class or creed. Our community of Black Gay men is a group of brothers coming together to prevent new brothers from becoming infected with HIV and just as importantly embracing and learning from the voices of men who are already living with HIV and AIDS.
