Client Services

The Wellness Center

Over the past 5 years, there has been an increase in the number of people in Alameda County whom are going without health care coverage. For those individuals living with HIV who cannot afford medical care, the APEB Wellness Center provides a variety of free healthcare services. APEB's clinic is staffed by skilled case workers who assist clients with acquiring medication through the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). No HIV Positive person needing medical care is turned away from the APEB Wellness Center.

Since 1983 the APEB Wellness Center has been providing high quality, state of the art, conscientious care to support the health of our clients in mind, body and spirit. At two convenient locations APEB Wellness Center provides: Primary Health Care, Acute Care, Physicals, Vaccines and a variety of HIV related Lab work. The Wellness Center also includes a Counseling Center staffed by two Psychologists, and a mental health Case Worker. Our Volunteers:

Jahmodd DeRamus – Massage Therapist

Certified Massage Therapist/Health Educator. Graduated from National Holistic Institute of Emeryville, Ca. 2007. Studied and practices with the belief that the first form of healing began with human touch. After all, what's the first thing we do when we bump into something and hurt ourselves? Rub it! Knowledge of APEB through an externship for massage school, because someone close to me lost their battle with AIDS, and used to say that "massage makes me feel better". Then after the 2008 elections and being inspired by President Obama who said to get out and be a part of your community, I started volunteering at APEB. It's something I truly enjoy!

B Well!
Jahmodd DeRamus, CMT

Joia Davis – Acupuncturist

Joia is a California state licensed acupuncturist, and a nationally certified massage therapist. She obtained a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. She currently has a practice in the Montclair neighborhood of Oakland, CA. With her massage training, she is well versed in the structure, function and movement of the body. Also, having a background in dance has given her a comprehensive knowledge of the mechanism of body movement and how to maximize athletic performance.

Joia specializes in pain management. She believes that pain can originate from a physical, mental and/or emotional place. Our inner pains, turmoil, and stresses of the day, can and will manifest on the outside. In her practice, Joia uses a combination of massage therapy, acupuncture, Chinese herbal remedies and nutrition to help you on your road to wellness.

Laura Metzdorff – Acupuncturist

Laura Metzdorff, L.Ac is a California state licensed acupuncturist originally from Long Island, NY. She began her graduate education at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York City and after her third year, she moved to California to finish her studies at Pacific's San Diego campus where she obtained a Master's in Traditional Oriental Medicine.

Laura believes that alternative medicine should be available to everyone and she has made it her mission to share her knowledge and skills with others. She is proud to be a part of APEB providing free acupuncture to its clients and staff!

About Acupuncture:

Acupuncture can play an important role in the wellness of those living with HIV and AIDS. Acupuncture can be used to compliment your Western treatments and reduce side effects of your medication. With the insertion of small needles in particular areas of the body, acupuncture can help to strengthen you physically, mentally and emotionally. In conjunction with your Western treatment, we can assist in optimizing your health by boosting immune function, decreasing symptoms of the disease, increasing your energy and reducing stress. Those who have used acupuncture in conjunction with their medication have found great benefits.
